Update on THE Soup...

OUCH! Lets just say this was the first thing we had for breakfast today. We had this "breakfast" at four this morning b/c we couldn't sleep with our upset tummies. The positive, since we were awake we went down to the gym and worked out!

So, conclusion, all that meat plus bacon drippings (aka grease) plus beans equals no bueno!

In other news...its is beautiful today and Cha Chi went down to the dog park and saw his two boyfriends (Cooper and Mikey the pugs) and of course embarrassed his mama, AGAIN! Their owner thinks its amusing and laughs. At least one of us is laughing. Then we went on a nice walk around the neighborhood.

Todays goal, attack the closet once and for all! Oh, second goal, throw out leftovers!!!

THE Soup

I am not sure if y'all have heard us talk about our New Year's Eve soup before!? If you haven't...let me tell ya something...it is mmm good!

We have a TON of venison from RBs big deer this year (good job, honey) and have been trying all kinds of recipes. Well, we made this soup New Year's day and loved it and said it would be perfect with venison sausage, so here is the recipe that I got from the most amazing website
A Year of Crock Potting.
Click on that website if you love your crock pot as much as we do and need a TON of recipes.
Here is the recipe and the stuff in red is the editing we did!

--1 pound dried black eyed peas
--1 pound spicy sausage (we used venison, kinda spicy)
--6 cups chicken broth
--1 yellow onion, diced

--1 cup diced carrots
--1 cup diced celery
--4 cloves garlic, diced (we opted for three but think four would have been better)

--1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
--1 tsp kosher salt
--1/2 tsp black pepper
--
Tabasco sauce (no thank you...spicy enough)
--three strips of cooked bacon and their drippings (suggestion from Sofia aka Grandma!)
--three pieces of leftover peppercorn pork tenderloin (we made it Monday and didn't know what to do with leftovers)
The Directions.

Soak your beans overnight. Drain and pick out the undesirables (broken, discolored beans) in the morning.

Use a 5 to 6 quart crock pot. This will serve about 8 people. Dice the veggies, and dump them into your crock pot with the pre-soaked beans. Add sliced sausage. Pour in broth, and stir in Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or on high for about 6.
Before serving, use a stick blender to smash up about 1 cup of beans (this is my favorite part of the recipe). If you don't have a stick blender, scoop out 1 cup of beans, blend them in a traditional blender, and add back to the soup. Don't blend too much---just enough to get the broth thicker and creamy-looking.

Ladle into bowls, and add
Tabasco sauce to taste.

We did not use Tabasco but when I tasted it I realized it need something so we called the one True Chef we know...Sofia!!! She suggested cooking bacon and chopping it up and putting it up with its drippings in the pot. Perfect!

Verdict...yummy!!!
Picture on the left is of the prep (Chef Sofia aka Grandma also suggested browning the sausage first)
and left is the yummy end result! Notice the bag around the crock pot...it's called SlowCooker Liner by Reynolds! Makes clean up sooo easy!

We started cooking this at noon and need something for lunch so RB fried up some of his seasoned venison backstrap and we made mac n cheese to go with...good stuff!

We stayed in bundled up today because of the ice storm that hit North Texas. RB was in awe of all the ice and cold weather...he is from South Texas and has never seen this before. It was pretty bad this morning but turned out to be a beautiful day and most the ice has melted away.
Cha Chi was definitely not a fan of the grass; that was completely covered in ice. Here are some pictures of the building and road in front of our place. It was weird to see them so empty and to watch the brave drivers drive so carefully on the roads.

No diaper cake today. I helped a friend make one for a shower she is going to this weekend and I will hopefully complete mine tomorrow!

DANGER....

RB is cooking!!!! Yep, RB decided HE wanted to cook tonight...end result...smoke alarms go off! HAHA! I had to call downstairs to make sure the building alarms did not go off. It really is not his fault. He wanted to make his venison that he marinated last night and had put jalapeno cheese in it and wrapped bacon around it. Well, we decided to broil it and all of a sudden smoke everywhere. We looked soooo darn funny waving paper and blankets trying to get the smoke out! Lesson learned...our smoke alarms work and are sensitive!

End result...they were actually pretty good! Tomorrow we are cooking venison sausage with bean soup. I will post pictures and recipe tomorrow!

Last thing, a picture of The Cha Chi in his new Mavericks bandanna!

Watch out Martha Stewart....

Ok, so I am no Martha but I am thrifty. I love my coffee and hot mint tea. For Christmas RB bought me a traveling coffee mug. It is from Starbucks and it is made to be personalized with your pictures in it. Well, I found another use for it... I love everything monogrammed and had been seeing personalized coffee mugs for $15-20. So, I decided to make my own!
I went to Micheal's and bought a bunch of scrapbook paper and came home and played on the computer with different fonts and colors, printed it on the scrapbook paper and used the template to cut the paper, put it in the mug and waa-laa!
You can see above all the different pieces of scrapbook paper I bought. Also, you can see the mug and in it I made one for RB and just used plain white paper and of course a picture of a deer (shocker). I also printed off a quote from Helen Keller that I like. I can change these as often as I like...

The one on the left is RBs favorite that I made (white paper with chandelier clip art and my name) The one on the right is my fav (made with scrapbook paper and monogram I made)

I am thinking about making these for a gift for a friend who is getting married...I will make it with her wedding colors and her new monogram...cute, eh?

These cups can be bought at Starbucks for about $10 and I also found them on amazon.com for about $10 with shipping at this link

Martha Madness is not over...tomorrow I will be making a diaper cake for a sorority sister who just had her baby boy...pictures to follow!

Cha Chi's Stomping Grounds

So not only did we move here but our 'lil man, Cha Chi, did too. Yes, it has taken him awhile to get used to the place but he is loving his new "restroom." There are a bunch of other dogs in the building and we have met most of them now. I will say that they have not been the best introductions...Cha Chi thought the other dogs wanted to more than just friends...wink wink if you get what I mean!!! He also tried to pee on another dog. Needless to say I was embarrassed. Oh well, the owners were very polite and he loves the dog park!

Here is a picture of where we take him at least twice a day but mostly three times. Notice the baggies(they are even scented) and trash can...all owners are SUPPOSED to pick up their pets mess but there are a few that don't. So annoying!
We also take Cha Chi on walks around downtown...yes, there is grass and he really loves the walks.

I am really going to try to update this everyday. I should have this weekend but I am new to this blogging stuff so be patient! Our first weekend in Dallas was fun. Friday, we stayed in and made dinner and watched a movie. Saturday, we had two very close friends over and went to a little pub right down the road (literally, less then .5 mile away) We had a blast and even sang karaoke! We came back here and played just about every game in our closet. Fun times!

We completely finished unpacking and have some organizing in the closet left and need to find decor for the wall...more pictures to follow soon!

Last, is another video at sunset. It is so much prettier in person...I guess y'all will just have to come see for yourself! heehee

Amazing Article

This is an amazing story that we hope y'all will read. We heard it this morning and it moved both of us.

There Are Some Games In Which Cherring For the Other Side Feels Better Than Winning
Rick Reilly

High school football is big in America, but I suppose there is no place where it is bigger than in Texas. Friday nights there are legend.
The fans scream; the stands are packed; cheerleaders with pom-poms jump and sway to the beat of the school band and everybody joins in the chants and stomps their feet on the metal stands until you are sure they will collapse.
This is the frenzy of Texas high school football.
But there is one football team in Texas that is a little different. When they play on Friday night, their stands are empty, no band, no cheerleaders, no mass of parents or townsfolk wearing the school colors and waving banners and flags. They take the field without anyone cheering them on. When they score a touchdown, which rarely happens, there is no wild celebration behind them… All of it seems hollow and muffled in contrast to the tidal wave of roars and drums and chants that come from the opposing side.
They are the Tornadoes of the Gainesville State School, a fenced, maximum-security facility. The young men who go to Gainesville State are there because they have made some major mistakes in their lives. But the players who are on the team are there because they have worked hard and have earned enough good behavior points that gives them the privilege to leave the facility and play football on Friday nights—always an away game for them—always a home game for their opponents—and almost always a loss. They don’t have a weight program or training equipment or high-paid coaches and assistants. They don’t have a large pool of players to draw from. The school has 275 boys, but many are too old or too young or can’t or don’t meet the “criteria” to play. And they don’t have the support of a town and a mass of parents and family and reporters and bands and cheerleaders.
That is, until November 7th. Something changed. They played Grapevine Faith Christian School.
A few days before the game, the Gainesville coach, Mark Williams received a call from Faith Christian coach, Kris Hogan, asking him if it would be okay if Faith formed a “spirit” line for his team when they ran on the field. Mark said, “Sure, that would be a real encouragement to the kids.” He thought that the line would consist of a couple of the JV cheerleaders, but when they took the field, there were a hundred people in it and it stretched to the 40-yard line, filled with Faith Christian parents, fans and varsity cheerleaders, complete with a banner at the end for them to burst through that read “Go Tornadoes!”. And then, those parents and fans sat in the stands behind the Gainesville players and when the Tornadoes broke the huddle and went up to the line they could hear people cheering for them, by name. When they got a first down, “their” fans erupted.
You see, coach Hogan had sent an email out to the Faith Christian parents and students asking them to consider doing something kind for these young men, many who didn’t know what it meant to have a mom and dad who cared, many who felt the world was against them, not for them. Hogan asked that they simply send a message that these boys were “just as valuable as any other person on earth.”
So half of the Faith Christian fans were now sitting on the visitor’s side of the field, cheering for the Gainesville team, and in some cases, against their own sons.
–Cheering for a team decked out in mismatched old uniforms and helmets.
–Cheering for boys who wouldn’t go home that night and have a smiling dad slap him on the back and feel his mom put her arms around him and say “I’m so proud of you son!”
–Cheering for the underdog.
This was a Friday night like no other for the Tornadoes. In the locker room, the players were confused.
“Why are they cheerin’ for us, coach?”
“Because, men, they want to encourage you. They want you to know that they care about you…that you have value.”

Coach Williams said the boys were stunned. For many of these kids, it may have been the first time that anyone had shown them, so visibly, unconditional love.
They were down 33 to nothing at the half. Williams encouraged his team to set a goal for the second half: to score a touchdown against this vastly superior team. And when the boys from the State School took the field again, with their fans cheering them on, everything started to click. And they did score. Not once but twice.
And the fans went wild.
Coach Williams was asked what the bus ride was like on the way home and he laughed and said that they were all asleep—their bellies were full. That’s because after the game, the parents brought a whole bunch of food over to the guys: hamburgers, fries, candy, sodas…and included in the meal sack was a Bible and a personal letter of encouragement from a Faith Christian player. But then, he said, they formed a line for us out to the bus. And the parents patted them on the back and said, “Nice game” and “Look forward to seeing you guys next time.”
As they left the field that night, Coach Williams grabbed Coach Hogan and said to him: “You’ll never know what your people did for these kids tonight. You’ll never, ever know.”

Love him or hate him...

He is still our President.
